Florida Derby Countdown

Top Horsemen Question Florida Derby Faceoff
This is a good read about the dangers of a duel this close to KY DERBY John Servis, trainer of 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Smarty Jones  , questioned whether five weeks will be enough time for either colt to recover from confronting an undefeated top-level opponent. "If they peak that race before, it will be hard for them, even with five weeks, to come back and give their best effort," Servis said. (Bloodhorse)

Florida Derby hard at the top, soft underneath
Explains why the field is full of also rans (hint $$$) A week ago, it looked as if the two might face just two or three rivals who would have to be heavily recruited to start against them. So, it was a shock when entries were taken Wednesday that the race drew a field of 10, more than six of the seven other stakes on the Saturday card. Someone has to fill out the order of finish, and there are prizes of $100,000 for third, $50,000 for fourth, $30,000 for fifth, and $10,000 for sixth through 10th.  (ESPN)
Clash Of The Titans: Nyquist, Mohaymen Headline Field Of 10 For Florida Derby
“This is why you get up early and go to the barn – for opportunities like this. To have our colt No. 2 and Mohaymen No. 1 and have that matchup five weeks before the Kentucky Derby is awesome,” said Doug O'Neill, trainer of the Eclipse Award-winning Nyquist, rated second at 6-5 behind even-money morning-line favorite Mohaymen for Gulfstream's signature event.” I think it's awesome for the sport and exciting for all the connections.”
The Florida Derby will be the centerpiece of a 14-race program featuring eight stakes (seven graded). First-race post time is set for noon. (Paulick)
Champion Nyquist Settles In At Gulfstream Park
Reddam Racing's undefeated champion Nyquist completed his cross-country trip late Tuesday afternoon to Gulfstream Park, where he is scheduled to make his next start in Saturday's $1 million xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1).

Trained by Doug O'Neill, the sophomore son of Uncle Mo left California Tuesday morning and set foot on the Gulfstream backstretch at 5:35 p.m. after traveling through the traffic and thunderstorms of South Florida. (Paulick)
Uneventful Draw for FL Derby Faves
“We’re pleased to be outside of Nyquist,” Kiaran McLaughlin said of his charge Mohaymen’s draw. “We just wanted to be outside of him, for one, and two, hopefully we’ll stay out of trouble being outside a little bit. It will give [jockey] Junior [Alvarado] an opportunity to ride his race and be out in the clear.”  (TDN)

The field, from the rail out with trainer and jockey in parentheses, followed by odds:
No. 1, Sawyers Mickey (Peter Walder, Scott Spieth), 30-1
No. 2, Fellowship (Stanley Gold, Jose Lezcano), 15-1
No. 3, Majesto (Gustavo Delgado, Javier Castellano), 20-1
No. 4, Nyquist (Doug O'Neill, Mario Gutierrez), 6-5
No. 5, Copingaway (Jaime Meija, Miguel Vasquez), 50-1
No. 6, Chovanes (Jorge Navarro, Edgard Zayas), 30-1
No. 7, Takeittotheedge (Dale Romans, Tyler Gaffalione), 20-1
No. 8, Fashionable Freddy (Nick Zito, Nik Juarez), 30-1
No. 9, Mohaymen (Kiaran McLaughlin, Junior Alvarado), 1-1
No. 10, Isofass (Francis Abbott III, Julien Leparoux), 30-1

Mohaymen, Nyquist Camps Ready for Showdown
While Nyquist has demonstrated an ability to win from on or off the pace, McLaughlin concluded that he expects Mohaymen to be tracking the West Coast invader in the early stages Saturday. (TDN)

Fellowship In It to Win It “We’re running against arguably the best 3-year-olds in the country, but I am where I am, and I’m not looking to avoid them,” said Trainer Stanley Gold.  “He’s already been third to Mohaymen twice, and they were both honest races. The extra distance will certainly be an aid because we know he’ll run late, and if we are actually lucky enough and decide to go to the Kentucky Derby, I’m not worried about the mile and one-quarter either. And having a little bigger field, as it seems we will now, should work to our advantage from a pace standpoint as well. I believe I’m running a live horse in there on Saturday. I don’t know how live, but he’s live.” (Daily Racing Forum)

Nyquist Pedigree and Mohaymen Pedigree ~They share Mr. Prospector.  Nyquist notables are Storm Bird, Storm Cat and Uncle Mo is the sire.  Mohaymen is from Tapit with notables being Seattle Slew, A P Indy and Unbridled.

So Far, it will be a four horse field, rounded out by Majesto and Fellowship (Horse Racing Nation)

Undefeated Nyquist and Mohaymen to face off in Florida in historic Kentucky Derby prelude
Jay Privman, national correspondent for the Daily Racing Form who will be covering his 34th consecutive Kentucky Derby this year, said he couldn't find any report in which undefeated No. 1 and 2 horses have met prior to the Derby. "One of the reasons is that horses used to run a lot more, so they had greater chances of getting beat," Privman said. "But even with fewer races, this year is a very interesting and compelling story." (Los Angeles Times)

Mohaymen Gets Final Work for Florida Derby
Shadwell Stable’s Mohaymen (Tapit), perfect in five career trips to the post, turned in his final serious drill ahead of next Saturday’s GI Xpressbet.com Florida Derby, breezing a half-mile Thursday morning at Palm Meadows. (TDN)

Nyquist Logs Final Breeze for Florida Derby
Nyquist worked his standard mile, starting slowly and finishing up quickly, but added a workmate. O'Neill timed the standout colt's wire-to-wire drill in 1:49 3/5, but had his last eighth in :11 3/5. (Bloodhorse)

Majesto looks to continue family's winning ways in Florida Derby
The Tiznow colt, who is coming off a maiden win Feb. 27 at Gulfstream, is expected to be part of a short field facing unbeaten Kentucky Derby favorites Mohaymen and Nyquist. “I know that the two big horses are very, very, very strong,” trainer Gustavo Delgado said. “To finish third would be very good for me. It looks like only six or seven horses will be in the race. Racing is racing, and anything can happen.” (DRF)

2016 Louisiana Derby Featuring Gun Runner

Louisiana Derby This is what it is all about. A top notch field, filled with many of the Kentucky Derby candidates (and plenty of Uncle Mo DNA) put on a great show. Gun Runner won and now has 151 points, sitting on top of the Derby Leader Board.  Is Gun Runner for real? Yes, without question. Is he the same caliber horse as Mohaymen or Nyquist? No, but he is a good enough horse that he can pull an upset. The plot will thicken with the upcoming Florida Derby when Nyquist and Mohaymen run...

Gun Runner has now bested Mo Tom every time he has faced him. Mo Tom was pushed hard into the rail in the latter part of the last furlong.

Jockey Corey Lanerie was frank after the race, admitting to fault in Mo Tom's defeat: “It was a bad ride and totally my fault. He came underneath me and I had more horse than I knew what to do with and I got him in trouble and went inside when I shouldn't have. I doubt they'll let me sit on him again. He's a great horse.”

Mo Tom's trainer Tom Amoss was disappointed by the decision as well: “It was a good race, but the pace didn't set up the same this time. I really thought he ran a prepared race and a great race, I was just puzzled as to why Corey went down to the rail. I just hope he didn't hurt my horse. I am surprised. There were other choices and I don't understand why he did what he did. Watching this was like going to the schoolyard and watching your kid get beat up by another kid. It's so hard to watch something like that with all the preparation we do. We will make sure he's okay before we make any other decisions.” (Paulick)

Plenty Of Options in the Louisiana Derby The $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby will be run this Saturday at Fair Grounds. Besides the attractive purse, the signature horse race of New Orleans also will be the first of the 2016 Kentucky Derby points races run in the United States with 170 (100-40-20-10) points on the line. With those two factors in place, it should come as no surprise that a solid group of 11 will meet in the starting gate this weekend to see who is best. The nine-furlong affair will feature a strong mix of local runners, as well as intriguing new shooters, making it one of the more interesting Derby preps of the year from a handicapping perspective.  (Horse Racing Nation Story)

Team O’Neill Eagerly Awaiting ‘East-West Rivalry’ Showdown In Florida Derby
The racing world awaits the multi-story lined showdown April 2 in the $1 million Florida Derby between the two undefeated favorites for the Kentucky Derby: Santa Anita-based Nyquist, champion two-year-old male of 2015 trained by Doug O'Neill, and Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Mohaymen, winner of the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth at his home track of Gulfstream Park, site of the Florida Derby. (Paulick Story)

Asmussen ‘Looking For Steady Progress’ From Gun Runner

Training well since his victory, Gun Runner  worked a sharp bullet on Mar. 14 at Fair Grounds Race Course, negotiating five furlongs with Florent Geroux up. The move was the chestnut charge's third consecutive five-furlong drill in successive weeks since the Risen Star and looks to set him up well for what will be his second race of the season. Updated Kentucky Derby Point Standings: Cupid Leaves His Mark
Saturday's single race offering points toward the 2016 Kentucky Derby was Oaklawn Park's Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. Bob Baffert's lightly-raced sophomore Cupid took the lead early and never gave it up, drawing away in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths. The gray son of Tapit earned his first 50 points toward the Kentucky Derby to move into fourth in the standings, behind Mohaymen (70), Destin (51), and Gun Runner (51). (Paulick Story)

2016 Rebel Stakes

2016 Rebel Stakes
Cupid (Equibase Profile) hits the wire first after a fine race.

Cupid shoots straight to score Rebel riches

Improving with every start, the lightly raced Cupid came to Arkansas from California as a newbie to stakes racing, but still an obvious threat in the Rebel Stakes. He leaves the state as a Grade 2 winner, and a horse poised to be in the starting gate of the Kentucky Derby seven weeks from today. The good looking gray son of Tapit made his way straight to the lead in the 14-horse field and never looked back on his way to a determined 1 1/4-length victory over Whitmore in the $900,000 feature. For his winning trainer, Bob Baffert, Cupid’s straight shot to the winner’s circle earned the Triple Crown winning conditioner his sixth victory in the Rebel in the last seven years.

Bob Baffert continued his domination of the Oaklawn Derby preps with his sixth victory in the GII Rebel S. since 2010 courtesy of Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith’s Cupid (Tapit). Off to a slow start from the three-hole in this loaded 14-horse affair, the slight 5-2 second-choice was hard-ridden by Martin Garcia to take control entering the first turn. Clocking a swift opening quarter in :22.96 with 20-1 shot Siding Spring (Warrior’s Reward) breathing down his neck, the gray slowed it down just a bit, hitting the half in :46.82, and had yet to be asked by Garcia as he showed the way into the stretch. With Siding Spring calling it quits on the backstretch, it was D. Wayne Lukas trainee Gray Sky (Tapit) who took up the chase. As that runner stalled in mid-stretch, GIII Southwest S. runner-up Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) came flying with a three-wide and looked like he would put away the pacesetter, but Cupid kept on finding to hold that runner at bay for an impressive first stakes victory. Recent maiden winner Creator (Tapit) ran on well for third ahead of “TDN Rising Star” Cherry Wine (Paddy O’Prado), who closed strongly from well back to be fourth, and favored Southwest winner Suddenbreakingnews (Mineshaft) checked in fifth. “We’ll bring him back here [for the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 16], as long as he doesn’t get light on us,” Baffert said. “He likes a little time in between his races. I’m just really happy.”

2016 Pasadena Stakes & Stymie Stakes & San Luis Rey Stakes

Stymie Stakes
Manuel Franco (Equibase Profile) shows how it is done aboard 20-1 shot (and winner) Turco Bravo! This is a must see, especially in the last two furlongs.

Pasadena Stakes

San Luis Rey Stakes

Generosidade upsets San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita

There were strength in numbers for Brazilian steel executive Benjamin Steinbruch's Haras Phillipson in the San Luis Rey Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita, as Generosidade, the longest shot in the field at 71-1, scored a stunning upset as the stable's better regarded homebreds, Gaga A and Going Somewhere, failed to fire.
Generosidade ($144.80) was tough to find on form, as she had finished no better than sixth in three prior starts in this country, all against females. In the Grade 2, $201,725 San Luis Rey, she faced males in this country for the first time, but that proved no bother, as she rallied from eighth in the 10-horse field under Tiaga Pereira to win by 1-1/2 lengths while leading a parade of longshots across the wire

Video of Stakes Racing March 12, 2016

11 Races, In Order San Felipe, Tampa Bay Derby, Santa Anita Handicap, San Carlos, Tom Fool, Frank Kilgore Mile, Private Terms, Caeser's Wish, Hillsborough, John Battaglia and Captiva

San Felipe Stakes
Danzing Candy, Mor Spirit and Exaggerator take 1,2,3 with Smokey Image nowhere in sight.  Danzing Candy did a great job of holding off Exaggerator in the stretch

Mike Smith talked after the race about his strategy with Danzing Candy saying “He warmed up great, he was on his toes. Our game plan was to put him on the lead unless he didn’t jump out of there well. We didn’t want to experiment. We wanted to play our hand, right off the bat. Let’s go to the lead and if they want to go with us, we’ll be probably be going too fast and if that’s the case, that’s the case. We were going to worry about it next time. “We did it. I left there very aggressive and he didn’t get away with anything. If you go twenty-two on this track today, you’re smokin’. And for him to hold off the caliber of horses he held off, was very impressive.” (Horse Racing Nation)

Tampa Bay Derby
Brody's Cause can't deliver.

The winner was Destin with Javier Castellano in the irons.  Javier was my favorite jockey when I started following this beautiful sport 2 years ago.

“It was a beautiful trip, he broke sharp out of the gate and put me in good position behind the top two horses,” explained Castellano. “I thought there would be a little more speed, but the way he set out was beautiful. I asked him turning for home and he responded so well. He finished good and the way he galloped out was phenomenal, especially after the (track-record time). The way he’s been doing, he could be a (Kentucky Derby) horse. He could be destined to win it—who knows?” (Horse Racing Nation)

Santa Anita Handicap
Melatonin runs "the race of his life" and blows away the pack by 5 lengths! This was his third straight win. He averages 69K per start. Yesterday, he walked away with one million bucks.

The Bottom Line ($$$) Bred in Kentucky by S. D. Brilie, Melatonin was a $20,000 purchase at the Keeneland September sale back in 2012. He had previously been graded stakes placed in a Grade 3 at Santa Anita in October, and captured his Grade 1 victory in his first start against that company on Saturday. Now with 4 wins from 11 starts, Melatonin more than quadrupled his career earnings, now standing at $768,000.  (Paulick Report)

Tom Fool Stakes
Back in New York for the first time since last fall, Salutos Amigos made an eye-catching last-to-first move in a field of 11 under Cornelio Velasquez to win Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Tom Fool Handicap for the second straight year. Salutos Amigos defeated Always Sunshine by 2-1/2 lengths. (ESPN)

San Felipe Stakes March 12, 2016 Preview

The San Felipe Stakes is a Derby Qualifying Race. The winner gets 50 points, place is 20, show is 10 and the 4th Spot is 5.  Mor Spirit is currently 5th and Exaggerator 11th on the leaderboard.  Uncle Lino is 33rd and I Will Score is 10 spots below him, so they both need a win to qualify as time dwindles.
