Plenty Of Options in the Louisiana Derby The $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby will be run this Saturday at Fair Grounds. Besides the attractive purse, the signature horse race of New Orleans also will be the first of the 2016 Kentucky Derby points races run in the United States with 170 (100-40-20-10) points on the line. With those two factors in place, it should come as no surprise that a solid group of 11 will meet in the starting gate this weekend to see who is best. The nine-furlong affair will feature a strong mix of local runners, as well as intriguing new shooters, making it one of the more interesting Derby preps of the year from a handicapping perspective.  (Horse Racing Nation Story)

Team O’Neill Eagerly Awaiting ‘East-West Rivalry’ Showdown In Florida Derby
The racing world awaits the multi-story lined showdown April 2 in the $1 million Florida Derby between the two undefeated favorites for the Kentucky Derby: Santa Anita-based Nyquist, champion two-year-old male of 2015 trained by Doug O'Neill, and Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Mohaymen, winner of the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth at his home track of Gulfstream Park, site of the Florida Derby. Asmussen ‘Looking For Steady Progress’ From Gun Runner

Training well since his victory, Gun Runner  worked a sharp bullet on Mar. 14 at Fair Grounds Race Course, negotiating five furlongs with Florent Geroux up. The move was the chestnut charge's third consecutive five-furlong drill in successive weeks since the Risen Star and looks to set him up well for what will be his second race of the season. Updated Kentucky Derby Point Standings: Cupid Leaves His Mark
Saturday's single race offering points toward the 2016 Kentucky Derby was Oaklawn Park's Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. Bob Baffert's lightly-raced sophomore Cupid took the lead early and never gave it up, drawing away in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths. The gray son of Tapit earned his first 50 points toward the Kentucky Derby to move into fourth in the standings, behind Mohaymen (70), Destin (51), and Gun Runner (51). (Paulick Story)
