Gulfstream Park: Fountain of Youth, Davona Dale, Texas Glitter, Here Comes The Bride, Canadian Turf. Palm Beach Stakes

Fountain of Youth Stakes
“I had to ask him a little more today because I let him run a little more from the half-mile pole,” explained Alvarado. “Turning for home when he’s switching leads I cannot check him, but maybe one or two times with the reins to let him know that he still needs to finish for me. He gave it to me right away. After that I geared him down, I didn’t want him to do that much. (Zulu and jockey John Velazquez) tried to engage me a little bit, but it’s horse racing—I’ve got the best horse today and he makes my job very easy. It doesn’t get much more exciting. I’ve always been very high on him. Each race he improves even more and he proves that he has everything that a rider would want in a horse to point to those big races.” (Story)

Davona Dale Stakes
"I really liked the way she did it. It was really impressive. It was the first time I rode her," said Castellano. "She did it really easy. I liked the way she started the first quarter mile. She was never rank or anything like that. I covered up behind horses, and when I asked her she took off. I can put her in the best, top quality horses in the country the way she did it." Story

Gulfstream Park Sprint
He had to stretch his speed 110 yards farther than optimum and did himself no favors by bobbling while leaving the gate, but the raw speed of X Y Jet was too much for his rivals on Saturday in the Grade 3, Story

Texas Glitter Stakes

Platinum Seven and partners’ Manhattan Dan broke sharply from the starting gate and streaked to an easy five-length triumph in the $75,000 Texas Glitter, a five-furlong turf dash for 3-year-olds that kicked off Saturday’s 13-race Fountain of Youth Day card. Ridden by Javier Castellano, the Gary Contessa-trained colt ran five furlongs over a firm turf course in 54.97 seconds as the 2.40-1 second choice. Noholdingback Bear, the 2.10-1 favorite, finished second, two lengths ahead of Monster Bea. Short Story

Sensational Star Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif.
Boozer rallied from third with a quarter-mile to go to win the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for older horses by a head Saturday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, Boozer ran 6 ½ furlongs on the downhill turf course in 1:13.03 and paid $14, $6.60 and $2.40 for trainer Mark Glatt.
Richard's Boy returned $11.60 and $7, while Forest Chatter was another length back in third and paid $3 to show as the 8-5 favorite. It was Forest Chatter's first lost in six races on the track's turf course after he had been off since Nov. 22.
It was Boozer's fourth win in eight races on the turf course.
"When we got to the top of the hill before the race he was on his toes. He was dancin' and prancin' around," Stevens said. "He went to the gate very aggressive."
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Boozer's career earnings to $463,192, with six wins in 20 starts.

2016 Fountain of Youth Preview

Big Derby qualifier this weekend ~  The Fountain of Youth Stakes offers 50 points for the winner to make the starting gate in May and 35 more for place and show ~ Mohaymen will be the favorite in the 6 horse field of this $400,000 stakes race.

From Horse Racing Nation Quick, name the last horse to capture both the Holy Bull Stakes and the Fountain of Youth. That would be Booklet, way back in 2002. To be fair, since 2000, only seven colts who won the Holy Bull also raced in the Fountain of Youth. Last year Upstart pulled off the double, but was DQ’d from first to second for interference with Itsaknockout in the second leg of Florida’s Triple Crown preps. This year’s edition of the 1 1/16 mile Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park drew a short field of six, headlined by undefeated Mohaymen. Full Read

From Chicago Now This year's renewal of the Fountain of Youth Stakes offers a $400,000 purse, as well as Road to the Kentucky Derby points (50-20-10-5) to horses placed in the top four.  MOHAYMEN will likely be the heavy favourite, particularly after his facile win last out over this same course and distance in the Holy Bull Stakes (GII).  Unfortunately for those seeking a price, MOHAYMEN looks like the goods.  He has never looked like he has had to try too hard to go as fast or faster than these.  He can get at least this distance, and we have not seen his bottom.  Furthermore, the pace should set up well for him.  AWESOME BANNER and GOLDEN RAY will most certainly send, AWESOME SPEED should not be far off, and even ZULU has been known to want a piece of the front-end action.  MOHAYMEN will not be far off the pace, but he does not stand to get locked into a duel.  Leave it to MOHAYMEN to do what he has done several times before: wait for Junior Alvarado to push the button, and roll past the early speed. TDN Shadwell’s unbeaten Mohaymen (Tapit) breaks from the outside post six in Saturday’s GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park. The grey was last seen taking the GII Holy Bull S. by an easy 3 1/2 lengths Jan. 30, but faces a formidable group of foes here. Trainer Todd Pletcher saddles two-for-two Zulu (Bernardini) on behalf of the Coolmore contingent and Stonestreet Stables. The $900,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida graduate earned the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction for a 7 1/4-length optional claiming romp going seven panels in the local slop Jan. 15. Fellowship and Mohaymen went head to head in the Holy Bull earlier this year. Mohaymen blew the field away.

Zulu is 2 for 2 but he is likely out of his class here. Here is the chart for his last win, an allowance race.  See it here.

Golden Ray was a laggardly 7th in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, which was won by Awesome Speed. the aforementioned Fellowship was 5th.

Awesome Banner, who has 3 wins in 3 starts must be taken seriously and might give you gamblers a decent payoff in an upset. He is capable of doing it. Check him out in the Swale Stakes.

El Camino Derby

FRANK CONVERSATION followed up his victory in last month’s California Derby with another stakes win at Golden Gate, only this one was far more significant, as he handled 1 1/8 miles and picked up all-important points toward a potential Kentucky Derby berth. Highly Recommended Article, breaks down entire field DRF

Favored Frank Conversation claimed the lead in upper stretch and held off a bid from long shot Tusk to win the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif. ...“It was a perfect trip,” Jockey Mario Gutierrez said. “It was a lot of horses, so I wouldn’t say we were worried, but we definitely wanted to get the perfect position right away coming out of the gate. It worked really good for us. The horses went to the lead and I was able to just lay down behind the speed like the last time. There were more horses today [than in the California Derby], but it was kind of the same trip. He’ll definitely stretch out because the competition was a little bit harder today, but he definitely kicked on and he never hesitated to keep pushing until the wire.” USA Today

The Quality Road colt became the first horse to complete the El Camino Real Derby-California Derby double since Chocolate Candy in 2009, and Frank Conversation earned his way onto the Road to the Kentucky Derby for trainer Doug O'Neill by picking up the lion’s share of points awarded on a 10-4-2-1 spread to the top four finishers. - America's Best Racing

Arcadia Stakes
Bolo is back!
Bolo returned to racing following a layoff of more than seven months to win his first graded stakes with a thrilling rally in Saturday's $200,000 Arcadia Stakes at Santa Anita. ESPN

"The horse had a terrific trip," winning trainer Carla Gaines said. "All I told Flavien was to let him break and find his place in the race. I felt he'd be sitting right behind the leaders and he would still have a kick home. That's exactly what happened. Did I think he was going to get there? I'm not sure. I was screaming very loud." Ireland-bred Obviously, one of America's best turf milers dating to 2012, appeared to have things his own way on the lead. "He settled great and he ran really well," said Mike Smith, who was aboard the 8-year-old for the first time. "They went in (one) thirty three to beat us. That's pretty impressive." Charlotte Observer

With regular rider Julien Leparoux aboard, Tepin ran in second place early in the 17th running of the Endeavour, tracking the pedestrian pace of Lovely Loyree, who led the field of six older fillies and mares through a quarter-mile in 24.19 seconds and a half-mile in 50.17. The field bunched up heading into the final turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, but at the furlong pole, jockey Julien Leparoux gave Tepin ($2.60) her cue, and she easily drew off to finish in 1:42.91 on a firm turf course.   Sam F Davis Stakes
Todd Pletcher, the seven-time Eclipse Award winning trainer, captured the Grade III $250,000 Sam F. Davis for an unprecedented sixth time — all since 2006 — as his improving Destin won his first stakes in near-record time on Festival Preview Day. Tampa Bay

Changes in his equipment, his jockey, and the venue brought out the best in Destin on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, where the gray colt rallied from just off the pace to win the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths over Rafting. The race was the key local prep for the biggest race of the meet, the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 12, a race that offers Kentucky Derby qualifying points to its top four finishers. DRF

Settled into fourth early on by John Velazquez, the Fair Grounds invader Destin tracked locally-based pacesetter Morning Fire through fractions of :23.92, :48.16, and 1:12.95. The heavy favorite Gettysburg, Pletcher's other entry, was unable to make the early lead and relegated to third along the inside. Rounding the turn for home, Destin found himself locked in a three-wide push for the wire with Morning Fire and the promising colt Rafting. Paulick Report
