2016 Fountain of Youth Preview

Big Derby qualifier this weekend ~  The Fountain of Youth Stakes offers 50 points for the winner to make the starting gate in May and 35 more for place and show ~ Mohaymen will be the favorite in the 6 horse field of this $400,000 stakes race.

From Horse Racing Nation Quick, name the last horse to capture both the Holy Bull Stakes and the Fountain of Youth. That would be Booklet, way back in 2002. To be fair, since 2000, only seven colts who won the Holy Bull also raced in the Fountain of Youth. Last year Upstart pulled off the double, but was DQ’d from first to second for interference with Itsaknockout in the second leg of Florida’s Triple Crown preps. This year’s edition of the 1 1/16 mile Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park drew a short field of six, headlined by undefeated Mohaymen. Full Read

From Chicago Now This year's renewal of the Fountain of Youth Stakes offers a $400,000 purse, as well as Road to the Kentucky Derby points (50-20-10-5) to horses placed in the top four.  MOHAYMEN will likely be the heavy favourite, particularly after his facile win last out over this same course and distance in the Holy Bull Stakes (GII).  Unfortunately for those seeking a price, MOHAYMEN looks like the goods.  He has never looked like he has had to try too hard to go as fast or faster than these.  He can get at least this distance, and we have not seen his bottom.  Furthermore, the pace should set up well for him.  AWESOME BANNER and GOLDEN RAY will most certainly send, AWESOME SPEED should not be far off, and even ZULU has been known to want a piece of the front-end action.  MOHAYMEN will not be far off the pace, but he does not stand to get locked into a duel.  Leave it to MOHAYMEN to do what he has done several times before: wait for Junior Alvarado to push the button, and roll past the early speed. Paulickreport.com Saturday's Grade 2 Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes brings up the highly anticipated matchup of three undefeated colts on the Kentucky Derby trail: Mohaymen, Awesome Banner, and Zulu. Full Read

TDN Shadwell’s unbeaten Mohaymen (Tapit) breaks from the outside post six in Saturday’s GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park. The grey was last seen taking the GII Holy Bull S. by an easy 3 1/2 lengths Jan. 30, but faces a formidable group of foes here. Trainer Todd Pletcher saddles two-for-two Zulu (Bernardini) on behalf of the Coolmore contingent and Stonestreet Stables. The $900,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida graduate earned the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction for a 7 1/4-length optional claiming romp going seven panels in the local slop Jan. 15. See For Yourself

Fellowship and Mohaymen went head to head in the Holy Bull earlier this year. Mohaymen blew the field away.

Zulu is 2 for 2 but he is likely out of his class here. Here is the chart for his last win, an allowance race.  See it here.

Golden Ray was a laggardly 7th in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, which was won by Awesome Speed. the aforementioned Fellowship was 5th.

Awesome Banner, who has 3 wins in 3 starts must be taken seriously and might give you gamblers a decent payoff in an upset. He is capable of doing it. Check him out in the Swale Stakes.
